Nazifa's Dream: Building back her school for girls in Afghanistan
For Women's International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF)
When this story was filmed in Spring 2021, Nazifa was running her school for 500 young girls and women in a remote province of Afghanistan. As an Islamic scholar, she was also a respected member of her community, countering violence and teaching and advocating for women’s rights.
Nazifa’s dreams of peace were shattered just a few months later when she was forced to close her school and flee after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.
Filmed as part of WILPF’s Power on Patrol documentary project, we edited Nazifa’s powerful and poignant story for International Women’s Day 2022. It’s a tribute to Nazifa and other Afghan women, who are now having to work from the diaspora to re-establish basic rights, including girls' education.
